Cannot get rid of New User account

WinXP Pro seems to have created a new user out of the blue(Admin).
Windows now boots to this new user. I have selected to use the startup
screen, but it does not appear; it boots directly to the admin
profile. I can switch to my old profile, but how can I delete this new
user or at least auto boot to my account?
At the same time some other settings changed in my old profile
(ctl-alt-del used to bring up the logoff window, now it brings up the
task manager).
I have scanned for viruses with updated files. Nothing found. Also,
Explorer is not closing down as it should; box with "explorer ending
program" appears then says "not responding".
Searchs never complete. Task manager shows System resources at
95%-98%, but other programs will run (slowly) with a search happening.

HELP. I am tearing my hair out over this!!!

Thanks

"Admin" is not a new user. It comes with XP and has full
control over the computer. You do not want to delete this
user.

The regular user accounts you've set up are created by
using the admin account or by using another specific user
account that has administrator powers and permissions.

Go check your various boot settings using MSCONFIG, which
you access from RUN under the Start button.

Normally, once you have created a user account, the Admin. account is
hidden from view.
If you using Fast user switching then that might leave the admin acct
folders in view.
