I powered up my new Sony Vario (Vista Premium Home)connected to my WEP
enabled router and had 10 minutes glorious internet access and then it
disconnected. Since then I can only connect locally to the Router. I have
tried both an Orange Livebox and a BT Voyager 2100 router with the same
results. The XP laptops connect through OK. I have tried no WEP and
variations thereof. I have Googled and found other bolgs with the same
problem but no solution. Can anyone help?

Did you setup the Internet connection in Network & Sharing Center? Use the
wizard there and set it up again. You might also need to do a complete system
reset after setting up the connection. I've read lots of complaints about the
Orange-vista connection. Check out the Orange web site for more help. Seems
they are having lots of trouble with vista.

John - Thanks for the reply. The last fix was what just loaded in the 10
minutes I was on the internet. I am not sure why an intRAnet setting should
be relevant. I made the change but it did not resolve the problem. Thank you
anyway. Regards.

Can you ping the outside net from the box? Can you ping the router?

Can you ping that machine from another machine on the router?

Do you have a proxy server?

Firewall?

Can you get mail?

Try this and post the results please? We can try to help you here. Shouldn't
be an issue with Vista or the router if they see each other, but may be a
config error.

After the 'fix', I had the same problem you had. After numerous other
attempts, I entered the address for my modem to see if I was getting to it
thru the router via my network connection. An option bar appeared on the IE
explorer asking if I wanted to enable 'intranet' and explaining that it was
now off by default. I figured, what the heck, I can always turn it back
off. Whalla, everything worked, so I went into IE and set up the security
for intranet to the same as I had for internet and all is well. Sorry it
didn't work for you.

Hello Curtis - the Vista laptop cannot ping the router or any PC on the
Wireless Lan or any external address eventhough the Network Staus on the
laptop is "Connected " - with Access: Local Only.

The Firewall is switched off. There is no Proxy. I cannot get mail as I
cannot access the internet. If I try to IPCONFIG RENEW it responds with
UNABLE TO CONTACT YOUR DHCP SERVER - however the Wireless LAN icon still
shows it connected with Limited Access. The Network and Sharing Center shows
the laptop connected to an Unidentified Network (Green Line) and no
connection to the Internet (Red X)

John - When you say you entered the address of your modem please advise where
you entered the address and how.

You might want to try system restore. Reset your download procedure to not
automatically download updates, and then manually control the downloads.

Thanks John. A complete restore and using WPA instead of WEP seems to have
worked. The Orange network does not like Vista and WEP together.

Thanks Mary - I checked out the Orange site and it advises not to use WEP
with Vista. After recovering the laptop to delivery state and restting the
Router up with WPA it worked.

FWIW ...Orange doesn't seem to like anything anymore. i.e. the quality of
service, in some ways, has plummeted since the French bought it from the
Australians ? orig. Freeserve then Wanadoo, now Orange ?

....anyhoo, I 've had a Orange Livebox (Inventel) for about a year, or more,
and the RIDICULOUS situation remains, (as far as I'm aware), that, (and to
paraphrase a little), "...Orange is aware that there is a problem with the
Livebox connecting to the "free Orange webspace." i.e. if I want to upload
any web pages to my free webspace, I can't FTP/upload with the Livebox
connected, I have to unplug the stupid thing and plug in my Linksys WAG354G
so that the ftp component/settings in my old Dreamweaver 4 can "connect" to
my free Freeserve/Orange webspace and upload my pages.

Also, on the odd occasion when my Livebox is supplying wifi to Dad's PC's
WMP54G pci card, in his PC in the house, it now only does so
intermittently, i.e. the WLAN connection icon, in his system tray keeps
disappearing and then, after "reconnecting," appears again.

I think I'm going to have to just forgo the "Orange free local/VOIP phone
calls and cut-rate mobile calls facility in the Livebox" and leave it
permanently disconnected, and use my WAG354G as my front/main router !!!

regards, Richard
