Cannot get an IP address

I have an XP Home Compaq and cannot get the DHCP IP addressing to work.
It defaults to the automatic local XP IP 169.254.

I have tried the various debuging tips in both MS and in the help forum but
to no avail.

Another strange thing is that while the card seems to send data as evedenced
in the LAN connection status it does not receive anything?

I have zone alamr which I disabled and alos where i added the card to be
recognised by Zone alarm but no change.

I had some malware which clobered things and ran WINSOCKSFIX XP which fixed
the internet connection fine. (very useful tool in times of need)

How would one re install the DHCP part of XP?

Any suggestions?

Make sure that the "DHCP Client" service is running:

1. Right click My Computer, and click Manage.
2. Double click Services and Applications.
3. Double click Services.
4. Double click "DHCP Client". If the Service status is Stopped,
click Start.
5. Set the Startup type to Automatic.

If that fails, see if there are any relevant messages in Event Viewer.
To run it, click Start | Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance |
Administrative Tools | Event Viewer. For more information, see:

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=308427

If none of that helps, un-install (don't just disable) ZoneAlarm, and
don't re-install it until everything is working. After un-installing
it, go to Start | Run | Msconfig | Startup and disable any remnants of
ZoneAlarm. If your computer connects directly to the Internet (e.g.
directly to a cable modem, not to a broadband router), be sure to
enable XP's built-in firewall to protect the computer from Internet
hackers.

Another option: Rt.click connection>properties>general tab>select
TCP/IP>advanced>select obtain address automatically

Steve, thanks for the info.

The service is running but in reviewing the log I note the following: excuse
the French

"L'allocateur DHCP s'est désactivé sur l'adresse IP 169.254.218.63, car
l'adresse IP est en dehors de l'étendue 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 à partir de
laquelle les adresses sont allouées aux clients DHCP. Pour activer
l'allocateur sur cette adresse IP, modifiez l'étendue pour y intégrer
l'adresse IP,, ou modifiez l'adresse IP pour qu'elle puisse faire partie de
l'étendue."

In short the DHCP server is being disactivited because the IP address range
is outside the DHCP normal range.

So I look a bit further and we find:

"Votre ordinateur a automatiquement configuré l'adresse IP pour la carte
avec l'adresse réseau 0010DCA38DC9. L'adresse IP utilisée est 169.254.218.63."

I.e. a warning that the PC has allocated IP 169. etc. to the card.
Now that is strange as the network card settings are all set to the
recomended settings on the various network problem solving articles for an XP
home PC.

So why is this things not working out right? The only different thing is
that my ADSL connection is via an USB port. This connection works fine for
the internet but could this confuse the wizard or something else?

Any ideas?

You're welcome, Speedy. Based on the first message, I'd say that
you've enabled Internet Connection and have changed the IP address of
the local area network connection that ICS uses to reach other
computers. By default, ICS assigns 192.168.0.1 to the LAN connection,
and it doesn't support changing it.

Please describe all of the connections that appear in the Network
Connections folder. Some or all of these might be present: PPPoE,
USB, Ethernet. Is one of them shared?

Hi Steve,

Internet connection USA ADSL is shared. PPP, ISDN, PAP, Server IP
195.218.24.1, Client IP 195.218.26.120.

1394 which is disactivated and was excluded from wizard install. This one
cannot be deleted it does not allow this, i.e. greyed out option. Is this
because it is a shared or multipurpose adapter?

Lan card ethernet who is now set to pick up IP address automatically. It
has been changed in the past to a fixed IP address as part of debuging tries
but is back to standard confidguartion like those shopwn in the various
debuging articles refered to on forum.

Remains a puzzling thing; I get a transmit light and data sent statistic and
the Linksys 5 port switch I use lights flickers but there is no receipt of
data. I can not determine why this is. It is as if there was something
blocking the receipt side which may also explain why the DHCP server is not
working as it should.

Any ideas on this lot?

Something's wrong with the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) setup.
The Lan card shouldn't be getting an IP address automatically. It
should be getting a fixed IP address from ICS.

Disable sharing on the USB ADSL connection. Reboot, enable sharing,
and check the LAN card. It should have:

IP Address = 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
no Default Gateway
no DNS server

Hi Steve,

OK, I have done this and get the desired IP address on the LAN card OK now.

There is still no data receipt when looking at the LAN card status though.

Now, is this not like if a firewall was blocking access? I have Zone Alarm
and a number of malware PC protect systems installed would these do things at
this level? I know a number of expert recomend removing ZA totally rather
than make it work at the same time as configuring the LAN etc. But unless
this is absolutly necessary I would prefer to set it up correctly. I have
added the LAN card as a trusted component in the ZA set ups.

A bit of history, I had to run WINSOCKFIX XP after probalbly a malware
removal.
This fixed the Internet connection fine. But would it have messed up the
LAN side?

Thanks for your patience and help.

You're welcome, Speedy.

As I recall, the free version of ZoneAlarm is incompatible with ICS.
In any case, I recommend un-installing ZoneAlarm while
troubleshooting. That's the only way to find out whether the firewall
is causing the problem. I've written a web page with details:

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/removefirewall.htm

Enable XP's built-in firewall to protect your computer from Internet
hackers before un-installing ZoneAlarm.
