Cannot ftp in XP

N

Nick Whitworth

About 2 months ago I started experiencing problems using
ftp from my laptop. All of a sudden I found that I
couldn't ftp from dos, IE, leech ftp or ws_ftp. Previously
I was able to access ftp sites using the laptop. I can
connect to these ftp sites from other machines.

Last night I reinstalled my Dell Latitude D600 and tried
to ftp - still couldn't connect to the sites. I always get
a timeout error. I am not using the internet connection
firewall and in IE I have passive ftp enabled. My internet
connection is a Wanadoo no ties dialup account.

Can anyone help?

Regards,
Nick

Hi,

Check with your ISP to determine the cause. It depends on how the ISP configures his servers and what features he allows.

If that was the problem, none or all of his machines would work. Not
just some.

I had this EXACT same problem ever since I upgrade my system from Win98SE to
WinXP-Pro last year. I was beginning to think this was inherent in XP-PRO,
since none of the other computers I use have had this problem.

I checked (numerous times) to ensure that I did NOT have the Internet
Connection Firewall (now called Windows Firewall) enabled on any of my
network connections.

I finally figure it out today - My Cisco VPN client has an internal stateful
firewall which was enabled (who knew?). Once I disabled this all FTP problems
went away. I no longer need to use passive mode, or FTP clients under Cygwin
to move files to my Linux system.

Don't know if this helps anyone, but it helped me. Go through your installed
internet tools and see if any of them has installed a firewall.
