cannot find server

CYNDI DAVIS

I was given a computer 2 months ago and have paid for
online service for 6 months in advance. Sad part-haven't
been able to get online for those 2 months. I have called
the online service (Earthlink) and they have tested via
phone and said it is a microsoft problem and that my
system isn't in the correct parameters or some such stuff.
I need help! I can connect i just can't "find the server"!
How do I go about finding where my parameters need to be
set? I got this computer for my daughter to use for a
school resource and she has yet to be able to do so.

Have you tried to ping some internet Ip Address?
To do so, go to Start \ Run \ write "cmd" and then press Enter. On the black
screen write "ping 216.239.59.104". Check if you receive "Reply from
216.239.59.104: bytes=32 time=47ms TTL=243".
If you receive it, then try to "ping www.google.com". what are the
statistics now?
