Hi all, I cannot edit this excel file, not just this one but a whole lo
of different excel files...
Now the person who sent these to me said I have to enable the file...
Excel never asked me to do this so I cannot do it.

More so I cannot even edit the file, only view it. The title bars al
have their options greyed out and I cannot even save it. In other word
I can only view this page.

Please help me, I am using excel on a win xp machine with office x
pro... and this has the same prob on my mac runnign office v.x

Thank you all so much!

Check the attached file for my problem file sample

Attachment filename: assign8.xls

It's unlikely anyone is going to open your files given the virus climate at
the moment.

Most likely, the files contain macros. It may be that your security is set
to high in which case you will not be asked whether you should run the
macros. Try setting your security level to medium and you should be prompted
to enable or disable.

First....the workbook is protected. You need a password to unprotect.

From Help on "protection".

Protecting a workbook file from viewing and editing You can restrict who can
open and use the data in a workbook file by requiring a password to view or
save changes to the file. You can set two separate passwords, one that users
must enter to open and view the file, and another that users must enter before
they can edit and save changes to the file. These passwords apply to the
workbook file and are separate from the protection provided by the Protect
Workbook dialog box.

Hi

the one i downloaded off the web from his link (assign8.xls) certainly isn't
protected in any way at all i have no problem editing, changing , saving or
whatever to it and i have my macro settings at "medium" and it didn't prompt
for any macros.

so either the process of copying it to the web solved the problem or i have
a very odd computer :)

actually, my thought is that the OP's version of Excel has not been
activated - as he said that his icons are greyed out, including the save
icon.

Agreed. I could edit and save the workbook assign8.xls.

However, if you look at Tools>Protection you will see the "Unprotect Workbook"
is available and requires a password.

I suspect that uploading to or downloading from the web has changed the
characteristics.

On OP's computer it could be a sharing problem.

Hi Gord

i'm going blind :) i looked at Tools > Protection and would have sworn that
neither was applied - but checking again i find that you're quite correct :)
(which doesn't surprise me in the least!)

download your file off the internet and see if you can do more with it ...
as i can save it and a few other things, but yes, it is protected at
workbook level and if you need to add / delete / copy etc the worksheets you
will need the password from its creator.
