Graham Archer

Hi,
When I go to windows update, I click on the files to download, the small
window comes up saying that it is preparing to download with the download
progress bar and the install bar. And then nothing happens!
It also refuses to upload pictures onto the ebay site.
There is nothing wrong with my connection because everything works ok on my
laptop, and I can also download files through my Opera 7 program (but I
cannot update xp through Opera).
I disabled my firewall because I thought that it might be trying to stop me
transferring files, but it didn't make any difference.
Perhaps it might be a java problem?
Anyone any ideas !
Thanks
Graham

Hello Graham,

Are you trying to use Windows Update in Opera, or are you experiencing these
issues in Internet Explorer? Unfortunately you cannot use Opera to install
Windows Updates.

If you do not wish to use Internet Explorer to download your updates, you
can use the Windows Help and Support Center instead. Here's how:

Click Start | Help and Support
Click on the Windows Update link

You should be able to select your updates and download them from here.

If this does not work for you please let me know and I will further
investigate your issue.

Thanks for the reply, but I still cannot update windows using explorer.
When I go to the update page , it scans my computer for updates. Then I pick
the critical files that I want to download.
I then click on the install now button and the small window comes up saying
preparing to download.
And then nothing happens.
I can still download files from other sites using explorer, but it freezes
up on the update site.
Any ideas?

Hello Graham,

I have contacted the Windows Update team and told them of your problem.
Once I get some feedback from them I will let you know so we can try any
solutions that they may have to offer.

I will keep you posted!

I heard back from the Windows Update team today. Here's some things to try.
Please let me know if any of this works for you. :-) Thanks!

=======================================================================
This issue usually happens if Dispex.dll or another file that we need has
become unregistered.

Make sure the following files are registered correctly by following the
steps below.

1. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 MSSCRIPT.OCX" (w/o the quotes).
You should see a popup message that this process succeeded. Click OK
2. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 DISPEX.DLL" (w/o the quotes). You
should see a popup message that this process succeeded. Click OK
3. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 VBSCRIPT.DLL" (w/o the quotes).
You should see a popup message that this process succeeded. Click OK
4. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 SCRRUN.DLL" (w/o the quotes). You
should see a popup message that this process succeeded. Click OK

Now try the Windows Update site and see if the problem is resolved.

If this does not resolve the issue could you please send us the Windows
Update.log file located in the Windows directory for this customer.

The other most common reason for this issue:

Microsoft has found an issue with the DCOM configuration in Windows 2000 and
Windows XP that can cause the download to "hang".

For Windows XP, follow these steps to check the DCOMCNFG settings:

1. Click "Start", and then click "Run."
2. In the "Run" box type the following:
DCOMCNFG

The Component Services window will open.

3. Click the plus sign (+) next to Component Services.
4. Click the plus sign (+) next to Computers.
5. Right click the My Computer item and select Properties on the popup
menu. The My Computer Properties window will open.
6. Click the Default COM Security tab.
7. Under the Access Permissions section, click "Edit Default." The Access
Permission window will open.
8. Check and see which groups/accounts (if any) are listed here.

You need to be an Administrator to use the Windows Update site, so try
adding either an Administrator Group or an Administrator User Account to the
Default Security section, and then try downloading updates from the Windows
Update site.

Hi Lance,
I reregistered the dll files etc but it made no improvement on my windows
update fault .

I then checked the DCOMCNFG settings, under the Access Permissions section,
it says "system".

I'm not sure what to try next?

Thanks for helping me out

Regards
Graham

Lance

I'm having the same problem as Graham. Seems to have occured since installing earlier windows patches. I had to download the recent security patches the long way and load manually

Followed you instructions, and registered OCX and DLL entries. No change

So moved onto DCOMCNFG steps, but when I get to "My Computer" there is no Properties option. I see
COM+ Application
DCOM Confi
Distributed Transactions Coordinato

I am administrator for this machine, and the problem is not on my laptop which has been patches to the same spec. Both running XP Pro SP1 and up-to-date patches (apart from this hardware patch that I can't get to!

I've also noticed that I can't get to the "Read More..." pages on today's 814078 patch. So then I tried to go to Knowledge Base via the Support menu, but that isn't working either. It looks as though all the hyperlinks have been disabled on the "Total Selected Updates" page under Windows Update

thank

I have taken your feedback and sent it to the Windows Update team. When
they get back to me, I will pass that along to you and see what else we can
attempt to get your back on track.

Thanks for your feedback and input, we appreciate it greatly. :-) I will
post back soon.
