cannot download from ftp sites

I can't get ie6 to download from any FTP sites, ie:
download.com, or hp.com. Everything is updated and I am
out of ideas. Any ideas?

And what, pray tell, happens when you try?

Copy/paste the following line into an IE Addressbar, click on GO, then
copy/paste the results into your reply:

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

Also state your Windows version.

You may need to set ie to go to passive mode. Go to
Tools->Internet Options->Advanced and look down near the
bottom of the browsing suggestion where there's a checkbox
labeled Use Passive FTP. Not having that checked was
blocking me from most of the FTP sites I needed to go to.
