Cannot display page error message

I am running IE6 on Win XP and have recently had an Adware
programme install itself. I have removed offending
article but am left with broadband dial up connecting and
apparently working but IE6 unable to communicate. No
websites are available, not even microsoft or update
facility. It appears as if nothing can communicate
through the connection (including Outlook). I have
emptied all temp internet files and history but to no
avail.

Can anyone help?
