Julian,
I've tried repairing the database using your and Steve's suggestion to no
avail.
Thanks anyway,
Jill

I, too, cannot send any messages because of an email sitting in my outbox
that is preventing it. I have sifted through your suggestions and have
even
tried deleting the mail database file windowsmail.msmessagestore, but my
system keeps recovering it! I am at my wits end and need help with this!

Did you delete BOTH copies of WindowsMail.MSMessageStore?

Does not tell me how to delete de message.....

There are two copies of WindowsMail.MSMessageStore, One in
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Microsoft\Windows Mail
and one in
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Backup\New
If you delete both of these the database will be rebuilt. However, while no
messages should be lost, some may be downloaded again and you may lose some
record of which have been read. I recommend that you only do this when they
are causing you trouble, like when they are in the Outbox. Otherwise I now
just mark them as read and ignore them.

In all you reading, didn't you come across my suggestion?

Unfortunately this is a common bug with Windows Mail.
Once you get a 'ghost' email stuck in the Outbox, and
it won't let you send anything, your options are quite limited.
If you don't feel comfortable doing the database deletion/regeneration
method that has been posted here by Steve Cochran, then your
only remaining option is to install and use a different email program.

I ended up having to rename the mail message store folder because it always
recovered the inferior file every time I deleted it. Had to call in the
Geeks at the cost of $129. Ouch. Please tell me you are working on this
problem that so many people are experienceing and that you will have a
resolution soon?

Who is this "you" that you're addressing?
This is a peer-to-peer help group. No Microsoft employees here.

As I said earlier, the interim resolution is to use a different email program.
Free. No Geek Squad required.

Move the entire contents of the message store directory to another
directory. Then start WinMail.

Thank You!!!! I was plagued with this problem today and I followed your very
detailed instructions and sure enough it did work.
The only problem I ran into was that WindowsMail was running in the
"background" even though I had it closed. I just did "ctrl alt del" and
closed it from there. This enabled me to delete the MSMessage file. Up
until that point it kept telling me it was in use.
Upon opening Winmail I did recover my inbox emails but I did lose my sent,
and sub folders I had made. Oh well..it's worth it!!

Thank you agian! :)

How long before Microsoft fixes this problem? I've been unable to send or
recieve messages in Microsoft Windows since April 9. I'm using internet mail
and don't like it. Microsoft Vista et al. bites.

Windows Mail has a newer (to them) form of database. Each email is stored

separately.

Do the following:

1) Open Control Panel then select Folder Options.

a) click on the Views tab

b) Select "Show hidden files and folders"

c) Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

d) click APPLY then OK.

e) Close Control Panel

2) From Windows Mail

a) Click on the Tools menu

b) click on Options

c) click on the Advanced tab

d) click the Maintenance button

e) click the Store Folders button.

f) make a note of the location of the message stores. It will be

something like:

C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

g) close Windows Mail

3) Open Windows Explorer

When it opens, you will see a small black triangle next to the user account

name. Click it to collapse it.

For the following, the triangle will not appear till you put the mouse over

the element in question.

Move the mouse to the "Computer" line. A triangle will appear, click on it

to expand it.

You should see something like "Local Disk (C:)"

Click on the triangle to expand it.

Locate "Users" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate <username> and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "AppData" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "Local" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "Microsoft" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Now, in the right window pane, locate Windows Mail.

Click on it.

In the left window pane, scroll upward till you see "Local Disk (C:)"

Now, in the right window pane, hold them left mouse button down on the

Windows Mail folder.

Drag it to the "Local Disk (C:)" and release the mouse button.

Select MOVE Here.......

Now, this may take a bit to get done, depending upon how much mail is there.

Give it time.

Now, when it's done, create a new folder name Windows Mail to replace the

moved one in the

C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft folder.

Now start Windows Mail.

It will be empty but that's no biggie.

Create a couple of folders in Windows Mail and name them Old Mail, Old

Sent.

Click on the Old Mail folder to open it.

Resize Windows Mail so you can see both Windows Explorer and Windows Mail.

In the Windows Mail folder you will see a Local Folders folder, click the

triangle to expand it.

Locate the Inbox folder.

In this folder you will see a lot of .eml files. These are the old emails.

Drag and drop ONLY the .eml files to the Old Mail folder in Windows Mail.

Do similar for Sent Items to the Old Sent folder.

Now, see if Windows Mail works for you.

They won't fix it until enough people call customer service and complain.

Frank- how many people need to complain? their seems to a large number of
people complaining about this and yes I am one of them.
As the last person said this bites is an understatment!
it seems windows need a good washing! this is one dirty program.

DGuess, I followed your instructions, RE: Windows Mail. When it got to the
point of moving the WM folder from the right pane to C: drive in the left
pane, it would not allow that move. A window opens up stating it is
estimating the time to make the move, then that window disappears. I waited
about 2 minutes, and nothing happened. No window stating it was in progress.
A window did open stating it could not complete this move because an
occurance of WM was open It asked if I wanted to try agan or cancel. I tried
try again, the estimate window shows again, and again disappears. Finally hit
cancel. No occurance was open. I had closed WM, as your instructions stated.
Now what?

I believe that M$ assess priority of fixes needed, based on enquiries to
customer support calls, not on what the newsgroups are full of or what the
MVP's tell them?

So the best way to get this problem escalated, it seems is to call M$.

Too many people are having problems with their Inboxes and Outboxes. A geek
friend gave me an easy solution: stop using Windows Mail. Open an AOL or
Yahoo account. Tell all of your contacts your new address. If you have to
access your Windows Mail, then get your mail via the server's website. I go
to optonline.net's website, click on Mail and I am able to send and receive
my mail. I can no longer send any mail from my Windows Mail Outbox, which is
a disgrace. I work from home so when I send documents from home, I save them
in my Documents and then attach them to my Yahoo Mail.

Lastly, uninstall Vista and let Microsoft know you're buying a Mac.

Ok, where do I find that, disable it and at what point in your list do I do
that, since one step is to open WM? I am an average user, not an expert at
this, so please be patient with me. Thank you.
