I have some data which was recovered from a client's machine. I was working
through it and found a problem when attempting to delete some odd temporary
internet files. These files have very long names and when you right click on
them the content menu only has the options Open and Send To. If I try to
delete the file by selecting it in Windows Explorer and then hitting the
Delete key there is no response. If I select a problem file and some normal
files, attempting to delete causes the Windows Explorer shell to crash. If I
attempt to drag a problem file to another folder it fails.
I can delete the problem files by deleting the entire folder they are
contained in.
Anyone know any details of this problem?
Thanks
Dave

Try Unlocker : http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

You mean you can't delete the problem files.....

Forgot to say, I have Unlocker already. I can not get it on the context menu
for any of the problem files I am currently looking at. (It is VERY useful
in general).
Thanks

If you have short file names enabled (NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation in
the registry), at the command prompt navigate to the folder then do:

dir x

then try the del command on the short name.

John

Whoops! That should be: dir /x

Click on the name, wait, click on it again. It should be ready to
rename. Try to rename, and if it "takes" maybe you can then delete it..

No luck. Completely ignores attempts to rename.
Did find a utility which is able to display the short filename and delete
either by short filename or UNC filename. (http://www.purgeie.com/delinv)
What I really want to know is why this is a problem, and why it crashes the
Explorer shell.
Thanks
Dave
