Cannot delete file in WinXP Pro

I am getting the following message when trying to delete a file on the
desktop in Win XP Pro SP2 (32bit)

Error Deleting File or Folder
Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk.

I have tried running check disc and it runs into problems if I check
"Automatically fix file system errors" it hangs between 32 and 76%

Any suggestions how to delete the file and if check disc is related to this
problem???

Thanks
M

First off - CHKDSK failing may be pointing you to a more serious issue.

My suggestion is to immediately backup all things valuable to you on this
machine to external media. Follow that by discovering the name brand of the
hard disk drive in the PC and downloading the disk diagnostics utility from
said manufacturer's web page and running a test on the drive - it is very
possible there is something wrong with the driver or controller and you are
risking losing everything on it at this point.

To get rid of the file - try "Unlocker" --> Google for it.

Thanks, it turned out to be the driver/controller settings in the bios, now
OK, and deleted the file with Unlocker.

Thanks for your help.
