Cannot delete file in separate hard drive - please help

I was downloading zip files onto a separate (Buffalo) hard drive and
the power cut out. Now when I try and delete these files I gt errors
such as: "Cannot read from the source file or disk". I have found posts
on Google (such as below) on how to correct this but I'm assuming that
this method won't work for a separate hard drive. I don't know anything
about DOS command prompts but it seems as though DOS can not recognise
a separate hard drive as I get error messages when typing the location
for the separate hard drive.

How would I go about fixing this problem? (I tried to use software such
as 'Unlocker Assistant' as well but no luck).

Try running Chkdsk on the external hard drive.
