cannot delete emails from deleted items folder

Outlook 2003 - have run scanpst.exe several times. says internal errors to be
fixed. Cannot now delete emails from deleted - error says "messaging
interface has returned unknown error - restart Outlook" - I do but doesnt'
fix the problem.
 
How big is your .pst file? After running scanpst.exe, do you allow it to
fix the errors? If you select all in the deleted items folder and press
Shift+Delete, do the items get deleted?
