Cannot delete certain MP3 & WMA files

AR

I cannot delete certain MP# and WMA files that were
downloaded onto the hard drive of my computer from the
internet.

I continue to get the message "Cannot download (filename:
Access Denied" "Make sure the disk in not full or write-
protected and that the file is not in use". I have
checked all of those conditions - the disk (hard drive)
is not full - and the file is not in use. I do not know
how to determine if a file on the hard drive is write
protected however.

Any suggestions?

Type Effective Permissions in help to see how to check security.

To see if the file is in use install the support tools
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306794&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH

Then type in a command prompt

oh +ot1
reboot then type
oh -t file "name of the file"

If it finds anything then it will tell you what program has that file open. If it doesn't find anything then the file is not in use.

The most likely culprit is explorer.exe. Try using taskmanager to end the explorer process, type cmd in File - Run, type

del c:\some folder\some file.mp3

If this allows a delete then explorer (or a program that has added itself to explorer) has the file open.

Just to add to what has already been posted if you download using a
peer-peer program like Kazaa or Tesla (or another) you may have someone
trying to download from you so the file is being uploaded and thus in use.
It can not be deleted until either you completely shutdown the peer-peer
program or the person at the other end cancels their download. Many
peer-peer programs default to automatically running at Start-up and most do
not completely shutdown when you close the program. So if you see the icon
to that app in the systray you should right click it and disable it. You
might also ensure that it is not set to run at Start-up. There should be a
check box within the app's Tools or Properties Settings to ensure that it
does not run at Start-up.
