cannot delete the old corrupt file as it say "cannot delete as file is
corrupt", how do I get rid of it, any suggestions?

What do you mean by 'I have transferred a new Normal.dot' file? Only Word
can create normal.dot, which it will do if it doesn't find such a file
present.

Close Word and see http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm
Reboot.
Then delete the corrupt normal.dot and restart Word.

Hi Art:

Like Graham, I am puzzled. I need the exact text of that error message to
be sure, but I think it may be saying "Cannot delete as the file is in use."

That means Word is open when you tried to delete the Normal template. You
need to quit Word to release the file before the system will allow you to
delete it.

If you use Outlook as your email program, you will need to quit Outlook as
well. Both Word and Outlook lock the Normal template.

If the error message really is saying that it cannot delete Normal.dot
because the file is corrupt, then you have a much more serious problem. It
means that your hard disk is failing, and you need to get expert assistance
quickly, before you lose your whole computer and all of the data in it.

Cheers

Very, very highly unlikely to be the drive. You also stated the possibility
of a problem existing (which isn't known) but without solution (which is a
SW issue).

Hi John
I have tried to delete this file via "My Computer" the into Doc & Settings
etc, but it will not allow me as it says the file is corrupt and so cannot
delete.

On Opening Word 2003, I get the mesg box "Word cannot open the Existing
(Normal) - OK Button
I press the OK button then I can use Word. However when I try to leave I
then get the Msg Box
"Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error (C:\Doc +
settings\...\Normal.dot)
Then it goes to a selction box for me to choose a .dot file

If the suggestion I posted earlier doesn't work, it sounds as though you
have corrupted the file system on your hard drive, either because the drive
is defective as John suggested or through mishandling. A start would be to
run chkdsk on your hard drive to attempt to correct filing system errors.
You should then be able to delete the errant file from a DOS window or from
the Windows Recovery Console. Get that hard drive professionally checked
out.
