Cannot create directory 'sys' or 's' or 'sy'

I was trying to install ActivePerl and discovered a Windows XP error. During
the install, it was trying to create 'e:\Perl\lib\auto\Sys' and failed with
an error message 'An error occurred while attempting to create the directory:
E:\Perl\lib\auto\Sys'. After investigating this, I found that I cannot
manually create a 'sys', 's' or 'sys' directory anywhere. When I say
manually, I include using the explorer interface or the cmd prompt. Explorer
returns the error msg 'Cannot rename New Folder: Cannot find the specified
file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name.' and cmd returns
the error 'The system cannot find the file specified.'

Please help, this is too wierd. I have two other machines on which it works
just fine. All of them have Windows XP Professional SP2 with the latest
updates.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I've gone so far as to remove all antivirus to make sure it wasn't the
problem. I performed a seach and found nothing. Is it in this group or
another one?

After 12 hours, I finally found the source and a tool to resolve the issue.
As had been suggested in another newsgroup thread, a rootkit turned out to be
the issue.

I could not get at the file until I used blacklight. An excellent tool that
can be found at: http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/

Thanks for all your assistance.
