cannot create backup

I cannot make a backup of my Word 2000 files
This happens if I use ‘Save As’ or Save
In my general options/ Save Box I have a tick in:
Always create a backup
Allow background saves
Save AutoRecover info every [10] mins.
Disable features not supported by Word97
In my Save As box just after I try to make a backup
I get a file, ~$ckup help. This disappears after I close the program
The name of the file I’m trying to make a backup of is ‘Backup help’
My version is Word 2000 (9.0 4402) SR-1
Can someone please help

The file you're seeing is the "owner" or "lock" file that prevents anyone
else from opening the file while you have it open. For more on this, see
“Description of how Word creates temporary files†at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632. But I don't understand what it is
that isn't working for you.

Suzanne,
What is not working is the creation of a backup file when I have all of the
above options checked, a backup file is not created.
It works OK for me in Excel though.

If you're referring to the "Backup of <filename>.wbk" file, this is not
created till the second time you save a document. It is not a copy of your
current version but one version back (see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/general/AutomaticSave.htm). And you will not see
the file in Word's File Open or Save dialog unless you have "All Files"
displayed. And AutoRecovery backups are by default not saved in the document
folder; see Tools | Options | File Locations for the folder to which they
are saved.

Backup copies use a *.wbk file extension and will be named "Backup of
Backup Help.wbk". Make sure you are viewing all files in the Open
dialog box.

Also, are you trying to make a second copy of the document or do you
want to make sure you have the last previously saved version
available? The "Always create backup" option will create a backup copy
one version behind your current saved version. If that isn't what you
want then manually create a copy of the document.

Additionally, ~$ckup help is a temporary file called an Owner file and
is used to lock a document in a shared environment. It contains user
name information rather than the document and is deleted when you
close the document.

Thanks Beth,
After I have used 'Save As' to save my file, this is when the 'Always create
backup' has been selected it does not create a backup. I have opened the file
again after the save, slightly altered some of the text, then using 'Save As'
after making that the backup option is checked, I have re saved it under
the same name and it still doesn't create a backup. of it.
I assume that in Word, it is the same principal that Excel uses and I have
no trouble creating Excel backups.

If you save a document under a different name, you are creating a new
document. Your old document still exists, and any backup that has been
created (if you have saved the document more than once) also still exists,
but there will not be a backup of the new document until you have saved it
twice.

The backup copy is created the second time you save the file. As I
previously noted, the backup copy is one version behind your current
saved version.

If you want an identical backup copy then you'll need to manually
create it by copying the file.

Additionally, the "Always create a backup copy" in Excel works the
same way, the backup is not created until the second save and it is
one version behind your currently saved workbook.

Although this option is specific to the workbook in Excel and it is
application specific in Word.
