cannot come out of standby or hibernate correctly

When I put the computer in hibernate mode (by going into the start menu,
clicking turn off computer, holding down shift and pressing hibernate), it
seems to work fine. However, when I press the power button to bring my
computer back, it shows a screen saying resuming windows with a bar. After it
is does filling up, it says that won't work and asks me something about
either deleting the restoration data and continuing or keep on trying. If i
delete the restoration data, the computer starts up normally. If i keep on
trying, it goes back to the menu again.
Also, standby mode doesn't work. It also seems to work fine, but starts up
instead when I want to bring the computer out of standby mode.
This problem was not there before I put in Windows Xp Pro. My computer
previously had Windows ME. The standby and hibernate modes worked fine until
XP. My computer is a Sony Vaio PCV-RX 450 desktop.
