Cannot close data file in Outlook 2003

I have recently come up with a problem that means that I cannot close
a PST file in Outlook 2003.

I get the message "The operation failed. An object could not be
found".

These are archive files. Well, one file that now appears twice.

I have tried creating a new main PST folder and using that. I have
tried to move, rename and generally hide the offending archive.PST
folder.

Nothing works. Nor can I get at the "Advanced" properties of the
archive.

If I log on to Windows as a different user and then open outlook using
the same main mailbox.PST file, I do not see these "phantoms".

Anyone seen this phenomenon? More important, anyone got a solution?

Check Tools | Services (or File | Data File Management) and remove the extra
Personal Folders reference, if there is one listed.

Otherwise, you should be able to just create a new profile (Start | Settings
| Control Panel | Mail | Show Profiles | Add) to get rid of the issue. If
you want to do it the hard way without having to create a new profile, you
can try this...

Select Start | Run

Select Start | Run

Enter Regedit and select OK

Check

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\profilename\ (Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT if
Windows NT or 2000)

The subkeys are hexidecimal numbers. Find the one(s) that reference the PST
file in question and select it. Export that key (from the Registry menu) to
a .REG file for backup purposes, then delete it.

If you seem to have multiple keys pointing to the same PST, try opening
Outlook after you delete the first one. If you find you deleted a "good" PST
entry, import the key from the REG file to which you exported it, then try
the next one.
 
Have you tried removing them through Control Panel, Mail applet, click Show
Profiles, highlight your profile, click Properties, click Data Files..?
 
Thanks. I tried all that.

It would not allow me to delete. Or they did not show.

In the end I went down the "New Profile" route.

Despite exporting all the rules, this now leaves with many rules that
need reconnecting to their destination folders. This is an area where
Micros**t could do better.
