Cannot check File and Printer Sharing

When I view Local Area Connection properties the File and Printer Sharing for
Microsoft Networks box is not checked. When I check the box I get a popup
that asks if I'm sure I want to DISABLE File and Printer Sharing even though
I am trying to activate it. No matter whether I say yes or no it will not
leave the box checked. This is an XP home machine with SP2. Is there some
way to reset this function?

The Local Area Connection is corrupted. Go to Device Manager and
uninstall the network adapter that the connection uses, which will
automatically delete the connection. Then reboot and let XP reinstall
the network adapter, which will automatically create a new connection.

Steve:

Thanks for your reply. I am still trying to find time to try your
suggestion which seems very logical. I am hoping it will work because I was
thinking a reinstall of Windows and all applications was my only option. I
will let you know.
