cannot change resolution on my notebook

I made the mistake of plugging a 2nd monitor to my notebook prior to turning
it on. Vista detected the monitor and downgraded my resolution (on both
monitors) to 800x600. When I went to change it (like I would normally in
XP) it told me the settings were invalid and perhaps I didn't have enough
administrative privileges to change it. So, I powered down, unplugged the
external monitor, and turned it back on. It is still at 800x600 and won't
allow me to change anything on the display properties screen. I do not
belong to a domain and I am the only login on the entire computer and I am
in the Adminstrators group (along with power user, and a few others that I
thought I might need).

I reallly, really, need to change it back to 1280x800 so I can get my work
done. Any ideas?

On my laptop (DELL) there is a button that toggles the display being used,
(internal, external, both) using the capabilities of least capable device.
Perhaps even though you have physically removed the 2nd monitor the laptop
is still thinking it is attached.
