cannot change HOMEPATH variable

The current %homepath% variable is set to \ on my XP desktop. I have tried to
change it via registry and the set command but neither works. Is there a way
to change this variable?

Right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Environment Variable and
make your changes.
