Cannot Burn CD-R's in any application and windows update does not work

Alright, I cannot burn a CD-R in any application, I have tried nero, easy cd creator basic, windows, iTunes, media player, and even realplayer. I can only burn to cd-rw's in anything. I have checked the IMAPI service in administrative tools/services and it is running and set to automatic startup, so thats not the issue. I really need to be able to burn cd-r's so i can backup my system and reformat both of my drives, but cant due to burning probls. Also, I cannot access windows update, when I go to the page, i get an activeX error that says "Your current security settings prevent ActiveX controls from being run on this page, as a result, it may display incorrectly" then i click ok, the error page loads and I get the same error again. The error page that comes up says "Administrators Only" and gives me instructions on how to run windows update as another user. I tried this and it still doesnt work, I also tried setting all my security settings to low in IE and that has no effect either. If I don't find a fix to my probs soon I'll try a repair install of xp, and if that doesnt work I'll have to buy another hard drive or an external one just so i can backup my stuff and reformat both my drives. Any help is greatly appreciated, especially on the cd-burning issue.

Hi Kassie, it's a bit lengthy but quite a few links to consider with your
problems. I would also check for spyware/malware/parasites and perhaps even do a
virus check. Hope something here helps you out.

CD Drive Is Not Recognized As A Recordable Device
Check the properties of the CD Burner drive and click on the recording tab. If
the check mark to enable recording is checked, uncheck it and hit apply and then
recheck it and hit apply. If that doesn’t work see:

In regards to your burning problem. Have you tried different brands of CDR
in case your burner has an issue with the ones you are trying to use? Just a
thought.

Thanks for the reply, I'll try the things you said, the

on and off to see if that helps like you said, also other
things you mentioned. Thanks much.
