Cannot browse the Workgroup?

S

Steve

I have a strange incident where connecting a WindowsXP Pro PC to a Peer to
Peer workgroup where I cannot view any computers or resorce or the workgroup
for that matter. Upon further investigation I can ping all devices but they
cannot ping me.

Error is that I do not have sufficient priviledges to view workgroup.

Any idea for I have never seen this happen before.

Workgroup consists of 3 XP PC's, 1x nt4 WS, 1 x w2k WS and 2x 98 WS.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Netbios is enabled and the computer
browser service is started.

you have access permissions. The semaphore timeout period has expired."

Resolutions:
1) make sure no any firewall running.
2) make sure you have created the same workgroup, and the same username on
w2k/xp for logging on a remote computer.
3) check user's rights.
4) you may want to enable guest account on w2k/xp.
5) if you are using simple file sharing, you may try to disable it and
re-share the drive manually.
6) if it is mixed OS (win98, NT, ME and W2K/XP) network, enable NetBIOS over
TCP/IP.
7) make sure the Computer Browser service is started if all computers are
w2k/xp.
8) stop Computer Browser service on win9x, ME and NT if this is a mixed OS
network.
9) cache credential by using net use \\computername\share /user:username
command (it is better to have the username logon shared computer).
10) if you have tried enabling netbios over tcp/ip but doesn't work, you may
try to load netbeui (loading netbeui may slow your network).
11) Make sure the server service is running.
12) If you can see the share in Network Neighborhood but not access it, this
issue may be resolved by verifying that both the share permissions and the
NTFS partition permissions are correctly configured for individual user or
group access.

Robert,

I have the exact problem. I appreciate your insights. I
have wrestled with this for hours.

My ME destop can see and access files on the XP Home
laptop. I cannot access shares on ME desktop from the XP.

How can you check to see if NTFS partition permissions
are correctly configured and how do you disable the
Computer Browser service on the ME?

Thanks again for your suggestions.

I have tried most of these, When I set a static ip up I could ping all other
machines but they cannot ping my address, to me this seems strange. For
there are other XP Pro Pc's on the network with no problems.

When this PC was first loaded the browsing worked it was only when it
attached to this other network that this happened.

I can map a drive at from dos prompt

This network config has a netgear firewall router attached to ADSL. We
receive dhcp assigned address and can browse the internet no problems.

double check the firewall. quoted form http://www.ChicagoTech.net
One-way ping only

If you can ping other computers and other computers can't ping your
computer, this is often caused by an improperly configured firewall
on you computer. For example, ICF should not be enabled on LAN NIC.

if xp can't access me and you don't have firewall running on the ME, some
settings on xp need to be changed. I used to have a document for this but I
may lose it. Try this: on xp, open windows explorer>Tools>Folder
options>General, check Use Windows classic desktop under Active Desktop.

Please post back with the result so that I can re-document it. Thank you.
