Cannot boot to Safe Mode

I'll try this NG:

When I try to boot to Safe Mode, it freezes at MUP.SYS. Please help.
I've posted in two groups. David Lipman in Security told me to run
his Multi AV in safe mode, but told me to ask elsewhere on how to get
into safe mode.

I asked on Customize and no one answered; I asked again today and
somebody said nobody was gonna answer.

Please ... somebody ... How can I fix it so it doesn't freezze at
MUP.SYS? Win MCE 2005 / XP SP 2.

Rain.... You restart the computer in Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key until
you see the Boot Menu Options appear. Select "Safe Mode"
Another alternative would be to put the problem drive in another computer as
a slave drive, and perform your scan from there.
