Cannot add/change/delete trust

I am trying to access a Windows 2000 server from a Windows 2003
server.

In Active Directory Domains and Trusts, I am trying to set the
trusts between the two but a pre-existing trust is preventing
me. I want trust Headoffice domain from SMDirect domain. I am
trying to set a trust on SMDirect saying HeadOffice but it says
cannot establish a trust because the trust is not set up on
Headoffice server. But on HeadOffice it says the trust is
already established and to seems to be pointing to
SMDirect.HeadOffice.Local which I can do nothing with on
HeadOffice - it wont let me make any changes or delete.

I think this might be something to do with an autotrust set when
the child domain was created by my predecessor.

All I want to do is to access either domain from the other but
Catch 22 pertains.

The parent-child trust was created automatically and cannot be deleted when
you add a child domain to an existing one.

But I want to create a trust between two separate domains and it is this
autocreated trust preventing me from doing so.

How _do_ I create such a trust then?

Hi Pat,

If I understood the situation correctly, one side of the trust is created
but not the other. Can you try creating the trust by selecting "This side
only" option on the UI for SMDirect side? You should then reset the password
of the trust to the same value. This should fix your problem.
