Cannot access users documents and settings folder

The other night I bought a new case and mobo but when I went to install my
old hard drive (which up until that point had NEVER even given me a minor
hiccup) would not boot when the computer searched for the boot record. So I
grabbed another hard drive and loaded XP on it to hopefully at least transfer
my files off the old hard drive. I had access to everything on the old hard
drive except my documents and settings folder for just me. For some reason
it comes up as denied. Can anyone help?
 
Have you tried going to the command prompt and doing a directory search for the
records? You could use the copy command from there to move the files.
