Cannot access some subfolders and files

I mounted the HDD of my WinXP Pro SP2 laptop into an IDE secondary channel
of my desktop PC because the laptop has mainboard problems. I need to get
the data out of My Documents copied to a 3.5" HDD on the desktop PC.

The desktop PC has a HDD connected on its primary IDE channel which contains
both Win200Pro SP4 and WinXP Pro SP1 on separate primary partitions. I can
boot to either and find the target folder located on the laptop's HDD.
Problem is I cannot get access to the files; cannot open them nor copy them
off the laptops HDD.

Using Win2000 Pro I was able via the My Documents folder Properties >
Sharing to get it configured as 'Share this folde' with 'User limit: Maximum
allowed'. And I also tried to edit the folder's Security by editing
Administrator permissions as 'Full Control' and checking ' Allow inheritable
permissions from parent to propagate to this object'. However when I clicked
Apply > Apply changes to this folder, subfolder, and files > OK, then the
error appeared:
"An error occurred applying attributes to the file <directory path to the
folder My Documents>. Access is denied."

Oddly enough the complete list of permissions for that folder is Allowed for
Administrator even though it really isn't so.

I would like to try some similar techniques via the parallel WinXP Pro, but
I don't know how. Unfortunately I will not be able to boot to the WinXP Pro
belonging to the laptop's HDD via the desktop PC, because the desktop PCs
hardware will likely prevent operation of the laptop's OS (only one computer
per WinXP installation).

Sounds like you need to take ownership of the files. Take a
look here for
the procedure:

Good luck
