Cannot access shared resources or machines within Workgroup

N

Neil Black

I have three machines that are all configured to be part
of the same workgroup and are connected through a single
router to a DSL modem. I cannot get the machines to see
another on the network. Here is my configuration:

Machine A runs Windows XP Pro and a wireless connection
Machine B runs Windows XP Home and a wireless connection
Machine C runs Windows 2000 Pro and wired connection

From My Network Places if I click the link to "View
workgroup computers" under the Network Tasks list, here
is the result:

.. Machine A can only see Machine C. When I double-click
on Machine C's icon I can gain access to its shared
resources. However, Machine B is not appearing as part
of the Workgroup.
.. Machine B cannot see anything. If I click "View
workgroup computers" I get the error "<Workgroup> is not
accessible. You may not have the permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of the
server to find out if you have access permissions. The
list of servers for this workgroup is currently
unavailable."
.. Machine C can see Machine A and Machine B when I click
on "Computers Near Me" in the Network Places window.
However, if I double-click on either machine to view its
shared resources I get the error "<Computer Name> is not
accessible. Access is denied."

I've followed all of the instruction is KB 318030 "You
Cannot Access Shared Files or Folders or Browse Computers
in the Workgroup", but I still have the problem.

Any suggestions for what to try next?

Tony, Neil, and Jon,

Has anyone gotten a solution to this WorkGroup issue? I have similar
problem.

I have a 2 desktop, and 1 laptop wired LAN running TCP/IP on all 3
machines.
They can ping, and netroute one another just fine, but.

1) Desktop: Windows 2000 Professional (Wired to Linksys Cable Router)
2) Desktop: Windows NT Server 4 (No domain setup)
3) Laptop: Windows XP Home

1) sees 2); 3) cannot see either 1) or 2).
2000Pro, and NTS4 machines have icons in Microsoft Network of Windows
Explorer for XP Home machine, but cannot see its' resources.

Are all part of Workgroup (of the same name). Two desktops see each
other on Microsoft Network, workgroup great, and can see each others
files/folders, and shared printer. The laptop running Windows XP Home
cannot see icons for other two machines in Workgroup, nor, obviously,
their fileshares.

What's the problem here?

This must be a fundimental problem. I have problems with 2 separate workgroup networks (at home and at a small office). I have 1=XP Home, 2=NT4, 3=Win98 at home - and 1 cannot see 2 or 3, 2 & 3 can see each other and 3 can even see 1. In the office I have 1a=XP Pro, 2a=WinMe, 3a=Win98 and 1a can't see either of the others and both of the others can see 1a. I am stumped and Gateway told me to 'kiss off' in so many words. In both places all PC can get to the internet through a router (that supplies DHPC) to a cable moden and can all ping each other. I have ICF turned off, NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled and a big pain. I am sure there must be an army of complaints out there on this one.
