Cannot access files in My Documents after upgrading to XP Professi

My office computer was upgraded to Win XP Proffessional; I am now unable to
access most of the files within My Documents. The files are color coded
green, and do not have an author associated when I hover over them. (I am
the author of all the filles in my documents). The files are encrypted.

General Tab
When I "right click" on a file and select properties, only two tabe appear,
the general and the security. When I click on the advanced button, the box
"Encrypt contents to secure date" is checked.

Security Tab
There are several Groups and users names listed. Example: Administrators,
Everyone, Power Users, a long number (the little face icon preceeding it is
not colored and has a question mark), StankoT (which is who I am, and I do
have administrator rights), and finally SYSTEM.

The Permissions for each group or user under the allow column are all
checked except for the last one (special permissions) and the entire column
of boxes are grey. Note: I cannot change any of the checked boxes or the
special permissions box. The Deny column boxes are all white except for the
last box which is grey. None of the boxes are checked.

When I click on the advanced tab I receve the Advanced Seurity Settings for
the file. The settings are:

Permissions:
All the users I previously mentioned are listed. They all have either Full
Control or Read and Execute permissions.

Auditing:
Nothing was listed, however I was able to load everyone listed in the
permissions block with the exception of two people: StankoT (myself), and
the long number with the icon that is not colored next to it. I suspect I
cannot add them because I am only able to add people from the AWT-019
location. The two I mentioned above are not in this location. I am unable
to search any other location.

Owner:
Only two owners listed, the Administrators group, and StankoT user (myself).

Effective Permissions:
I am able to check all users except for myself and the long number.

Even though the properties shows me as the owner and the Administrator as
the owner (which I am a part of that group), I still cannot access the
file(s). I receive : cannot open the document; user does not have access
priviledges.

The file is still coded green; any attempt to remove the checkmark for the
Encrypt box under the general tab, advanced attributes dialog box results in
the following message:

An error occurred applying attributes to the file:

C:dcuments and Settings\*.doc (the * is not literal, I just substituded for
the name).

Access is denied.

I have followed instructions from other posts to "take control of a folder or file" I was able to take ownership, but still unable to access the files. It is as if the computer thinks that I am someone else other than stankot when logged in"

Please help
