Cannot access data on burned disc

I used Microsoft's built-in DVD burner software to burn data to one of my
discs. The data burned successfully, but I ejected the DVD instead of
closing the disc session.

According to the help articles, if I have ejected a disc prior to closing
the disc session, I can:

------
If you remove a disc from your computer without closing the disc session,
you can close it at a later time. Just return it to the computer's disc
burner and follow the steps above to close the session.

Steps Above:

1. To close a disc manually
2. Click to open Computer.
3. Right-click the drive icon that represents your writeable drive, and then
click Close session.

Once the disc is ejected, the session will be closed and the disc can be
used in other computers and devices.
-----------

This, of course, did not work or I would not be writing. When I reinserted
the DVD into same burner (within the same computer) that created it, the
"close session" did not appear in the context menu.

I would like to retrieve my data on this disc. Any thoughts?

If you are using a DVD+/- r, and you eject without closing, you can guess it
is a lost bit of data. If you ised a formatted CD-RW or a DVD +/- RW, then
you are good to go. It is the lessons we learn. With "one writes" always let
it close.
