Hi,

Answer me this:
Does computer a have windows firewall on?
Can you ping computer a from computer b?
Can you telnet to computer a on port 445 (windows file sharing port)
from computer b?

Thanks,

Can you connect if you specify the username and password in
MACHINENAME\USERNAME format?

i.e. if I had a user "Max" and a machine "Computer" I would logon with:

Username: COMPUTER\Max
Password: <my password>

If you go start > run on computer B and type in \\ComputerAsName, what
error message is reported (I assume there is an error, because you say
it cannot connect)

it says the following:

"\\computername is not accessible. you miught not have
permission to use the network resource."

both computers are members of the administrator group.

"bob"-
I am having the exact same problem that you described here and i
have yet to find an answer after working with a microsoft tech support guy
for almost 2 weeks now. If you find an answer then please please let me know.
This is driving me up the wall! I am monitoring the replys as it looks like
you have someone helping you and hopfully he can find an answer because i'm
sure you are as frustrated as i am. If the Tech guy i'm talking to finds an
answer i'll post it here right away. My E-Mail is (e-mail address removed)

would logon with:

\\ComputerAsName, what

because you say

Are you using simple file sharing? If not, please report what settings
are setup both for network and NTFS permissions. Also (obvious things),
are there any shares on computer A? And is "File And Printer Sharing For
MS Networks" setup in the ethernet card properties?

I had the same problem with 3 XP machines behind a Linksys
router. After installing SP2, none of them could see the
workgroup anymore, although I could assign shared printers
by specifying the full path manually.

Here's how I got it running:
1. Enable the "Guest" account on all machines.
2. On the 'problem child' click Start/Run/ and
type 'secpol.msc', then click OK.
3. Expand Local Policies and click 'security options.'
4. Right-click "network access: Sharing and security."
5. Click "Classic - local users authenticate as
themselves."
6. Click OK & close down the window.

When I did that on one machine, immediately all the others
magically started working. You might have to do that on
more than one machine. I have since put the security
policy back to "authenticate as guest" and it still works
fine. I have no clue as to why...

See KB article 870903. The section on 'Configure
the "Network access: Sharing and security model for local
accounts" local policy setting'

All of my machines can see each other fine, i just cant get into my "server"
machine from any of the others. I can see and move files freely between the
other two and from the "server" but i cant access the "server" from the other
two. I did try your solution anyway and it had no affect on the error
message. I relized today though that i had SP2 installed on the server
machine already when i hooked up my network. The other two didnt have SP2
untill after the network was created. I have since upgraded the other two and
they seem to work fine (when i got around win firewall) Maybe that can jog
sombodys memory and they will come up with another idea. My Microsoft Tech
guy is taking his own sweet time with getting back to me.

If you still have a problem, Check Local Security Policy/User Rights
Assignment/Deny access to this computer from the network:

make sure guest is not listed here. Somehow it was on mine. Clearing it
solved my problem.
