Cannot access Any ftp site

G

Giles Papworth

I seem to have a weird problem, I can't seem to access any ftp site at all.
I have no trouble with websites but ftp's is a real hassle.

I have turned off all firewalls and tried and this has made no difference,
any thoughts?

What is your ftp client? Any error message? Are you behind NAT router?

I am having the same problem--I can connect just fine to the internet, but I
can't connect to any FTP sites. When I try, the program I am trying to
access it with simply freezes up and enters the "not responding" mode. Even
if I right-click on the Shorcut for the FTP site that I had, the application
freezes up. The only thing to do is "end program". The weird thing is, just
a few days ago I could connect to the FTP sites without a problem! In
desperation I tried running system restore, but it told me that it could not
restore to a point prior to the time that I had started experiencing the
problems.

I have tried running antivirus applications and anti-spyware applications,
but none of them has detected anything. I have tried disabling firewalls,
pop-up blockers, etc., but nothing seems to work.

The only thought I can think of has to do with a Macafee security program I
had installed. The password that I picked out wasn't working, even though I
had the right password, so I had to uninstall the program before I could
connect to the internet. Since uninstalling the program, however, the FTP
sites haven't worked. I don't know how this could have messed up my settings
or made it impossible to restore my computer to an earlier time.

I am connected to the internet via a cable modem. I have a wireless network
up in my home which employs a netgear wireless router, but my computer is the
one connected with the cable to the router. When I try to access the same
FTP sites from the other computers in my network, the sites come up just
fine, so I know its something to do with my computer and not my hardware or
the site. I can't think of any other information to share--I hope its enough
for someone to tell me of some way to fix it. I've tried everything I can
think of!

I would apreciate any help anyone has to offer. Thanks,
Jeremy

I'm having the same type of problem both of you reported. Since the last
post was on 8/20, and it's now 10/5, I wanted to see if either of you have
been able to resolve the problem, or have any suggestions to try.

Thanks,
ray...

Sorry Rabrown, but I ended up having to use system restore to restore my
computer to an earlier time. Unfortunately I don't know what caused my
problem, but system restore did fix whatever it was. This probably won't be
too useful for you, but I thought I would reply anyway just so you would know
what worked for me. Good luck with it, and if you figure out something that
works, let us know.

Jeremy,

Thanks for responding. I'm still hopeful that I won't have to do a system
restore. The main difference that I'm having from what you said in your
original post, is that nothing freezes up on my computer, it just gives me an
error message that it's unable to acces the ftp site. I've tried several
different FTP clients, as well as going through the XP Network Places
routine, and they all give me the same type of message about not being able
to access the site. My problem is also different from yours in that it's my
laptop wireless computer that's having the problem. My desktop that's
connected directly to the cable modem works fine. I've tried connecting
through different wireless networks, and the laptop has the same problem with
all of them.

Anyway, I'm going to keep searching for an answer and trying other things,
so if I find anything that works, I'll let you know for your future reference.

Thanks again,
Ray...

Jeremy,

Just wanted to let you know that I finally resolved my problem, and it
turned out to be very simple. At some point in recent weeks, I had
downloaded the latest version of Netscape and made it my default browser. I
also use Mozilla Firefox, so I decided to try making it the default instead
of Netscape. After doing that, I can access the ftp sites again. I have no
idea why that should make a difference, but that was the only thing I
changed. I know it doesn't help your situation since you already did a
system restore, but it just goes to show you that the simplest things can
cause big problems.

Regards,
Ray...

I have the same problem. I'm trying to upload files to my website via
dreamweaver but an error comes up "ftp connection error - cannot connect to
host". I have diabled all firewall and virus software, reinstalled
dreamweaver but still no luck. However, 2 days ago i reinstalled a windows
update KB890830 and i got connection but the next day i was back to square 1,
no connection. I don't want to use system restore so am confused. Please
help. Thanks
