cannot access a shared folder of a Windows Me PC from a Windows XP

My configuration: A very basic home WLAN network with:
- 1 Netgear Router/ADSL Modem
- 1 Windows Me desktop with a printer ("desktop")
- 1 Windows XP Pro laptop with SP1 ("laptop")

No firewall on the "desktop" and "laptop".
IP addesses are assigned by DHCP by the Netgear box.
NetBios on TCP/IP is enabled on both the "desktop" and "latop".
Netbios services are running.
I have assigned "MSHOME" as the workgroup name to both the "desktop" and the
"laptop".
I have shared a folder on both the "desktop" and the "laptop".

I can ping the "laptop" from the "desktop" and also do the opposite, using
either IP addresses and hostnames.
I can access the shared folder of the "laptop" from the "desktop".

I cannot access the shared folder of the "desktop" from the "laptop".

From a DOS CMD on the "laptop"
============================================
(I made a translation from French, so some terms may not be exact).
nbtstat -R
nbtstat -a desktop

IP Address of the node : [192.168.0.2] extended ID : []

Table of NetBIOS names of remote hosts

Nom Type State
---------------------------------------------
PC <00> UNIQUE Registered
MSHOME <00> Group Registered
PC <03> UNIQUE Registered

MAC Address = 00-0F-B5-04-A6-CC
net view \\PC
The system error 53 occurred.
The list is empty.

I made some traces on the "laptop" using Ethereal
===================================

192.168.0.2 192.168.0.255 NBNS Name query NB desktop<00>
192.168.0.3 Broadcast ARP Who has 192.168.0.2? Tell

192.168.0.2 192.168.0.255 NBNS Name query NB desktop<20>

You can see that the "nbstat -a" command works fine.
And the "net view" command failed after 3 attempts. (no answer from the
"desktop")
You can see that 2 Name Queries are slightly different.
According to Ethereal:
- <00> means "workstation/redirector"
- <20> means "server service"

Any help is very welcome. I have read most of the articles in the forum
during the last day without success.
Thanks a lot in advance.

So the XP computer cannot access the shares on the ME computer?

Follow these setup rules:

Congratulations for your site and its steps by step instructions.

I run your Win98/ME instructions, and it partially solved my problem.
I can now see from my XP computer the shares on my ME computer
using the command "net view \\COMPNAME".

However, "net view" command still fails on my XP. I get the error 6118 after
about 15 second.

I would like to run your step by step instructions on my XP Pro computer,
but it seems that some links are no more valid:
http://www.careyholzman.com/xp/pro/xppro-1.htm is OK
http://www.careyholzman.com/xp/pro/xppro-2.htm is KO!

Thanks again for your help.
