We are running xp home edition on a Microsoft MN510
wireless adaptor and have posed the same problem twice
before. Please do not tell us to rename the HOST file
again... IT DOESN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM!!! We did the
destructive HP system restore TWICE and it didn't solve
the problem. This is the only site we have found at
Microsoft to ask a question that doesn't want to charge
$35 to send an email about problems with a product that
is still under warranty.

We are unable to access "My family.com" all we get is
the generic 'page cannot be found' on IE, on Netscape
we get 'connection refused' I have been going to this
site for yrs. I then downloaded some microsoft windows
updates and have not been able to access it since. I
can access it from my computer at work, and we have no
problem accessing any other site.

Last Sunday my husband was at the HP help and support
center for 10 hrs with different techs trying to solve
the problem....to no avail. We tried changing the
registry and all the ie settings that the techs at HP
could think of, among a few dozen other things. All that
was accomplished was that our system got so MESSED UP we
had to do a destructive system restore...therefore losing
a lot of info. And still the problem exists...

Right now the only thing I would like to do is a C
format and completely clean the drive....but I
can't....HP did not give me a copy of Windows XP with
this $1300 computer I bought!! I am still under
warranty, how do I get a tech out to my home to fix my
system, or how do I do a COMPLETE C: format without an xp
disk?

In plain English, HOW DO I GET THIS PROBLEM SOLVED????????

To start with, your headers show the following;
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4910.0300

This suggests that though your first stop should have been
to the Windows Update site, you failed that test.
This is the only site we have found at

Much better if you'd set up Outlook Express to handle
reading this via the NNTP newsreader and directing it to:
news://msnews.microsoft.com and 'subscribing' (in this case)
to microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser
The point is, this isn't a "site" it's a newsgroup, though you
may be using some kind of silly web interface??

Maybe this is becasue the closest thing I could find is
really spelled http://www.myfamily.com vice your
suggested "site" with the big space in the middle of it?
I then downloaded some microsoft windows
updates and have not been able to access it since. I
can access it from my computer at work, and we have no
problem accessing any other site.

The only update that might have had a direct impact on
reaching it before and not now really should have been the
one that killed off the nonstandard
username, password@somedomain HTTP login, but one
would think that this kind of data would have been
stated by you ....

Stuff happens, and if the above "typo" was part of the
eaquation ...??? how's the tech supposed to know?

Seems to me that this is an issue you'd take up with HP, not
sure why you'd think that a peer-to-peer support group staffed (?)
by folks volunteering their time would jump in to make a house
call to solve your "warranty" issue. Explaining how to do a Format
on a proprietary system that has the "copy of the install disk"
already in place on that hard drive is a bit too complicated to
do from here, I'd say, especially if the real issue is as simple
as the typo in your query.
In plain English, HOW DO I GET THIS PROBLEM SOLVED????????

Start from the beginning and provide actual facts, cut/paste if
necessary.

Myfamily.com is the only site I cannot access.

I searched HOSTS in sys32 drivers etc and found no
entries. Am I doing something wrong there?

I cannot eliminate the wireless connection...it is our
only entry to the net here in the desert. We have been
using it for almost a year now with no other probs.

The MN510 is not a router, just a wireless usb adaptor to
connect to our connection(Laughlin Wireless)

There are no other computers using the MN510.

Thanks for replying.

sorry to have stepped on toes here. I was under the
impression that this site was operated by microsoft
people. I've just gotten the runaround everywhere I go.
Seems my problem is mine alone and nobody
else's...especially those who are responsible for ie
problems. I won't find any answers here...just some folks
who tell me to stick it up my WaZoo. I'll buy a Mac next
time.

Do other Laughlin Wireless subscribers have the same problem?

Did you open HOSTS (plural, not Lmhosts, no extension)
(C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\ETC) for the search?

Did you rename the correct file to OLDHOSTS?

Is your anti-virus application up-to-date and have you run a full system
scan? (Do both daily from now on.)

Check your system for "hijackware":

Dealing with Hijackware

http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles & CWShredder
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run in this order:

1. CWShredder (fix all)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all)

3. Spybot (generally, fix all in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

As I tried to point out, any help or guidance offered can
only be based on the data you provide.
Seems my problem is mine alone and nobody
else's...especially those who are responsible for ie
problems. I won't find any answers here..

With 3 to 800 hundred posts a day, I find it hard to
go with your finding no answers here. However, will
agree with that answers may be hard to find, seeing
as how so many of those 3 to 800 daily posts include
20 to 200 asking the same questions over and over as
they can't be bothered to sit back and see that the
question they just have to have answered right then
and there has already been asked and answered 30
times in just the last hour ... ok, maybe a small bit
of exaggeration, but if you take some time and look
through this thing (well, again, after you actually set
up your newsreader and connect to the newsgroup
directly) .. you'll note many folks with the same kind
of issue ... some can't access secure sites, some can
only access secure sites, some can't use search engines,
some can't connect at all ... on and on ....
.just some folks who tell me to stick it up my WaZoo.

and to think I offered anything at all, and am stupid enough
to even offer more suggestions.
Myfamily.com is the only site I cannot access

data changed from your last post. This makes a difference.
I searched HOSTS in sys32 drivers etc and found no
entries. Am I doing something wrong there?

Do a "Find/Search" for any fole named "hosts" on your
C:\ drive. You may be looking in the wrong place, you
may find more than one. rename any and all to take them
all out of the equation.
The MN510 is not a router, just a wireless usb adaptor to
connect to our connection(Laughlin Wireless)

And as such, that points out the obvious that your previous
statement of running Windows XP Home edition on this pice
of gear was wrong, something I made no comments on as
it was so easily seen as untrue .. yet, going back to pointing
out that folks can only go with the story you present.

You state that you've talked to HP, you've apparently
tried to deal with Microsoft, but you fail to mention whether
you've talked to Laughlin to see if perhaps they are blocking
access to the site for some reason.

What happens when you try to Ping the site?

Have you yet done the suggested only 100+ times a day
routine of downloading, installing, updating, and running the
anti-spyware tools of AdAware and SpyBot - Search and
Destroy? Standard answer and solution of probably more
then 80% of the issues raised in this newsgroup.
I'll buy a Mac next time.

I've got an iBook sitting right here next to me. Guess what?
The support forums for the Apple products are just like these
peer-to-peer Microsoft newsgroups (although in general, that
side of the house seems to contain a few more folks that read
first, then ask questions that still aren't answered)

I didn't notice that you stepped on any toes. If you're still following this
thread, post a reply. We'll see what you've tried.
