When you delete the original item, don't send an update. As far as I can
tell, you won't be able to do this for all attendee's calendar's only your
own. The only way to update everyone's calendars is for you to send the
updates to everyone. That's how others' updates occur.

Just change the meeting recurrence to end on today's date and send an update.

Sorry, but that doesn't work. Setting a different end date causes Outlook to
regenerate the entire series afresh, thereby erasing any exceptions you've
made to individual recurrences. If you've made none, then what you suggest
would work, but it's often the case that a particular recurrence has been
modified and you'd lose those modifications.
