Can you password protect shared folders on a network?

Hi,

Is there a way to password protect a shared folder on the network so when it
is selected you must first put a password in to gain access to that
folder???

Some more details might be needed to answer this, such as, where exactly is
this on the network, on what machine, and what OS (and OS version!) is that
machine running?

It depends on which specific network operating system (NOS) you use
(NetWare, Windows, etc.), but, in general, this isn't common. File and
folder access is usually controlled via some variation of permissions.
