Hi All:
I would like to re-install Windows XP SP3 and have been reluctant to do
so because I do not have the original CD from one of my frequently used
software programs. If I re-install Windows XP SP3 I will lose this
software program.?? I would like to be able to use this program after I
newly installing XP.
Do I need to take a image of my current hard drive and then reapply the
image after my re-install?
What about my registry? Can I import the orginal settings of this
software program to my newly created registry after the re-install.
Has this been done...
Expected result. To be able to run software program by copying the
backed up version of its installation directory and registry settings
to a newly re-installed XP box.

Please help..

There is no such thing as SP3, also it is not clear your intent?
You have software installed on your PC? But You want to reinstall
WinXP?
Well if I've got that correct, you can over write with XP, and no
it won't delete the software you already have installed.
But if a Re-install of XP is required it is always better option to
format and perform a clean install - which will wipe your installed
software.

I would like to be able to use this program after I
newly installing XP.
Do I need to take a image of my current hard drive and then reapply the
image after my re-install?

An "image" if applied will be an exact replication of your system
as it already is? Yes it will over write any other installation steps
you may take, and you'll be back to square one.

What about my registry? Can I import the orginal settings of this
software program to my newly created registry after the re-install.
Has this been done...

You are completely out of your depth, But if you have your original
genuine XP installation disk, you can try a repair!
Please help..

The easiest and safest solution:
If there is specific software you do not want to lose,
Buy a replacement version and then perform a fresh
install of XP.

Sorry, I meant to say SP2 not SP3. I would like to do the above. I do
not have the CD for the software that was
previously installed.

A repair install (aka in place upgrade) will reinstall windows to the
service pack level of the install CD and keep all data and installed
programs intact. Any updates beyond the service pack level of the
install CD will need to be reapplied. See this link for info on how to
do it.

A clean install will remove all data and programs. Restore data from a
backup, and install programs from their original media. There is no
really effective way to migrate the installation of that one program
from it's current installation to a clean install.

Hi
The gist is that on your PC you are having grief and
was wondering if you should do a fresh re-install of
WinXP, but you have software installed that if you
format, you have no method of installing other
software that is now installed?
If you perform an "image" reinstall, it will just
reconfigure your pc to as it is right now! All the
same issues and problems etc
You cannot extract the "frequently used software"
from your current configuration and reinstall it
after reinstalling XP. Just not a viable option.
But You have other options:
a) Post details of the problems you are having
with XP, this forum has experianced and very
patient MVP's who will try to help "fix" it.
b) If you have your original XP installation disk
load it, and the menu has a repair option.
Also there is system restore etc, and some
OEM manufacturers such as HP, Compaq etc
include a recovery facilty in the set up.
c) The software you value but have no disk
for, if you supply details, others may have
other options, you maybe able to download
alternatives from such as www.download.com
Some software houses may allow a download
of a replacement if you have relevent reg' details.
d) All PC's benefit from an occasional format and
fresh re-install of XP when the PC's configuration
is showing signs of stress, the end result being
you may just have to purchase a new version
of the other software you may lose.

Post details of the problems/issues you are having
with XP, and post details of the software you want
to keep.

This produces nearly 6 million results in google.
Have you got the name of the software correct?
Is it "Virtual" rather than "Visual"?
Or, is it Visual Enterprices?
Basically, there is NO software by that name?
I actually suspect it to be a web link?
Probably in your favorites folder?
This has now become a waste of time.
End of thread.

Don't know what that is, but your best bet is to do a repair install.
But before doing ANYTHING image your drive.

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Print it out, and read it all the way through, BEFORE doing the repair
install. MS didn't make it easy to do, so reading the instructions all
the way thru will help you avoid the pitfalls MS lays in the way of a
successful repair installation.
