Is it possible to password protect (or otherwise stop anyone from being
able to change the Document)

Betty,

1. Simply do a "Save-As".
2. Select the "Tools" menu, found on the right side of the save-as dialog box.
3. Select "Security Options".
4. Enter a password in the "Password to Open" field, if you wish to keep
people from opening it altogether.
5. Enter a password in the "Password to Modify" field, if you wish to allow
people to open the file, but requires your password to alter it.

If you do both, then they can neither open it nor alter it without the
passwords. Be carefule with this though, as you want to make sure you use a
password you will remember, yet others will not know. You don't want to lock
yourself out of your own document.

Hi Betty-

Bill's info is accurate, but needs to be expanded on just a little bit...

File-Level password is _absolutely_ not sufficient if confidentiality is an
issue. It wll prevent inadvertent acces to the file, but if someone with
sufficient knowledge (it doesn't take much) and/or time is determined to get
into the file, they can.

PW to Modify (Read Only) will still allow _anyone_ to open the file and do a
Save As to create a new copy which they can then freely modify & save changes.

Also, either of these two options are essentially stripped from attachments,
so if you email a copy to someone your original will still be 'protected' but
the attached file they receive wil not be.

If true security is needed you should look into network security in a
networked enviroment and/or explore File Encryption options which provide the
level of protection necessary.

Remember, though, anything that someone can read, they can copy and modify
the copy.
