Can word 2003 speak the text for me instead of me reading it?

Assuming the necessary hardware & software have been installed, yes. Go to
Tools> Speech (in Windows XP Professional - other versions of Windows may
operate somewhat differently). You can also assign a keyboard shortcut to
toggle it on/off.
