can windows xp pro be installed over xp home in a new notebook?

I have just received a new Compaq Presario notebook computer that
comes with Windows XP Home edition installed. I wish to trash my
previous notebook that had XP Pro installed and install XP Pro in the
new Notebook.

Is it possible to install XP Pro over XP Home, or must I first delete
XP home
and then install XP Pro?

All replies welcomed!

Hi Aaron,

Yes, you can install WinXP Pro over WinXP Home, but....

1) Your WinXP Pro disk from the other system must be a retail version, if it
came preinstalled on the other system, then it is probably locked to that
system and cannot be installed on any other machine.

2) A WinXP Pro retail disk may not contain all needed drivers for the
notebook. Check with Compaq that needed supporting drivers can be
downloaded.

3) Compaq may very well offer a customized version of WinXP Pro that *is*
supported for their machine, you should ask them.

4) Changing the preinstalled operating system on most systems usually voids
the warranty.
