Can this problem with my HP LaserJet 4L be fixed or should I throw it away?

I don't understand by "exchange unit". How is it different from Paper
Pickup Assembly? Do oyu mean, assembly + "D" pick up roller?

An exchange unit means that you send the old assembly back to the people you
buy the new assembly from, you save a few dollars that way. Usually they charge
you the full price and then credit you some of that when they get the old unit
back, then they refurbish your old unit and sell it. Worth dealing with someone
near to you if possible, certainly in your country

So, I buy the new assembly instead of them doing the refurbished work
on mine. Okay, I'll take my printer with me and let them take the old
one and put the new one for me.

You are right as far as text goes, but printing graphics will result in
be very dissimilar appearance when printing on a B&W laser printer. 600
dpi will provide a lot of different gray tones while 300 dpi will
require patterns (obvious cross hatching, etc) for many of the gray
tones. A photograph printed on a 300 dpi machine is quite gross, while
the same print on a 600 dpi machine will be acceptable. The same is
true with copy machines, most of the older copy machines will render a
photograph as a mess. As machines improved the dpi, photographs
improved. Don't know what the dpi of copy machines are now, but when
they rose above 600, I think to 1200, photographs became readable.

My CLC 950 is 400dpi and thats fine in black and white (apart from the
fact its playing up (its up for sale on ebay!)). I now have a spangly
new Minolta Bizhub, which I think is 600dpi and thats fine as well.

I don't know the resolution of my other photocopier which is a black and
white only but that must be about 15 years old and I just have to
lighten it if I want to copy a photo.

I ended up dropping the peinter off instead of waiting till Saturday.
I also took the other printer HP Office Jet 6220 that was giving error
message of catridge alignment. It tuned out that it was defective ink
catridge giving that message on 6110.

The price quote I got was $75 for the feed assembly for HP Laserjet 4L
but when I got there, he said that the shaft wasn't broken. (I realized
that I wasn't pulling the D-Shaped roller; I was turning it, sorry).

Anyway, he was going to check into it and tell me what's wrong but the
next day, he called me and said it was fixed. When I went to pick it
up, he said, if I remeber the exact word correctly, that the problem
was misaligned issue. He said that there are gears inside and he
realigned them and cleaned the whole printer. BTW, there were 2 screws
missing where u open the cover to replace the catridge. Strange because
I don't remember touched those.

Well it costed $45; he didn't charge me for Office Jet 6110 testing.
