Can this be done? Picture - Border Separation?

E

Ed

I'm running Word 97 in Win98. Is there a way to control the distance a
border is set away from a picture? When I insert a picture in my
document and put a border around it, the border is right next to the
picture. I would like to have a space in between them. I can't seem to
find a way to do this. Can anyone help me with this?

An old-timer trying to keep up

Thanks,
Ed

Hi, Ed. Instead of trying to use borders (won't work...), go to
View-Toolbars and pick your Drawing toolbar (if it isn't there already).
Draw a rectangle shape around the picture. If it hides the picture, click on
the rectangle, then on the fill bucket button on the drawing toolbar and
choose NO FILL.

I'm testing this in Word 2003, so some of what I'm saying may not be
applicable to Word 97.

If the graphic is floating, provided you haven't cropped it in Word, yes,
there is a way: crop it negatively. Turn on the cropping tool on the Picture
toolbar and drag *out* from each edge of the picture. You may have specific
cropping settings in the Format Picture dialog (Picture tab); if so, you can
set the distance from each side specifically.

If the picture is inline, you have to add a border using Format | Borders
and Shading, and unfortunately the "Distance from text" options usually
available in that dialog are not available for pictures. If you put the
picture in a frame (wrapping can be set to None), you can apply a border and
use the "Distance from text" options--up to 31 pts.

Another possibility would be to center the graphic vertically and
horizontally in an oversized table cell.

Suzanne:

More than I bargained for - two options from you - and one
from Anne. They all work.
What would we novices do without you.!

Thanks,
Ed
