can symbols be inserted into the subject line

I am trying to create generic alert e-mail messages and would like to use
symbols for recognition. How can I get standard symbols inserted into the
subject line rather than as an attachment?
 
What kind of symbols? ASCII characters created with the ALT+NUMBER
combination should work.
