Can someone help me with my networking...

I am running xp home on two computers, and have them connected with a
crossover cable. MAinly set up for playing games over a lan. My setup used
to work, but I had to format my drive, and now I can't get one of my
computers to setup the network right again. One computer still has all it's
info, and will see the other... but the one I formatted, will not find the
other. I was able to bring it up by going to >Start >Run and entering the ip
address of the working one. And I can get to the computer, but in all other
ways it won't acknowledge there is a network. Not through games or through
windows. When I try to look at the workgroup, it tells me the directory of
computers is not available... or something to that effect...

I have also tried to remake the network with the wizard, and it doesn't seem
to do anything... the same connection that I already had is still on the
"network connections" screen... And I cannot find the place where I can
change the ip address and stuff to try and make bothe computers the same...

CAn anyone possibly help me???

Thanks alot...

Kier,

There are a few reasons for the problem, which you're describing, and which is
seen here regularly. The most common is a misconfigured or overlooked firewall,
but there are other possibilities too.

If no help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as
a start. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely:

Okay, thanks, I tried all that, and to no avail... I'll refer to the comps

Charles,

You have 2 problems.
# IPX / SPX.
# IPV6.

I'd guess you have IPX/SPX for your games playing. That's fine, though its
presence may make diagnosing your problem a bit more complicated than it should
be. But let's start by working on the IPV6 issue.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html

After you remove IPV6 from Jessica, post updated "browstat status" and "ipconfig
/all" from both computers. We'll go from there.

And post after my replies, please. Help me to help you.

Charles,

Removal of unnecessary protocols is simple. Just highlight the network
component to be removed, and hit the Uninstall button below the list. Follow
instructions, and restart the system when requested.

To get consistent results, you need to remove IPV6 before running any
diagnostics.

If no help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as
a start. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely:

Okay, thanks, I tried all that, and to no avail... I'll refer to the comps
as 1 and 2... I can still access comp 2 from 1, but comp 1 will not act like
it's on the network... And I still cannot access comp 1 from 2, though comp
2 does act like it's on the network???? so here is the browstat, and ip
config for the two...

<SNIP>

I hope this may help you see what is wrong with my setup... Thanks for the
help...

Charles...

Charles,

You have 2 problems.
# IPX / SPX.
# IPV6.

I'd guess you have IPX/SPX for your games playing. That's fine, though its
presence may make diagnosing your problem a bit more complicated than it should
be. But let's start by working on the IPV6 issue.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html

After you remove IPV6 from Jessica, post updated "browstat status" and "ipconfig
/all" from both computers. We'll go from there.

And post after my replies, please. Help me to help you.

Okay, I followed the instructions on that page, but for the removing IPV6...
I have no idea what that is, or how to remove it... the other part worked
fine, neig\ther computer were on the correct setting.... both are still
running the same though... here are the browstat and ipconfig now... they
look the same to me...???

Kier,

There are a few reasons for the problem, which you're describing, and which is
seen here regularly. The most common is a misconfigured or overlooked firewall,
but there are other possibilities too.

Charles,

OK, the diagnostics for Jessica are a bit cleaner. But it can only see itself.

Maybe this is part of the problem?

Charles, when you make any changes, you need to retest with both computers
physically connected, and functioning, as best as possible. Testing with one
computer not connected will waste your time. If KIERDEVIN shows "Media
disconnected", you're not going to get useful results.

now...??? Who knows... Thanks for all your help with this,... I definately
know where to come next time...:)

That's great, Charles. Thanks for the feedback, and the update.

Chuck,

I apologize, I am old and don't know how to post this properly so you
will see it. I thought I would just do a reply to this. I am having the
same problem with two pc's in a workgroup using WIN2000 PRO. I hope you
can help me too.

I am having the same problem. I am running win2k pro with sp 4.0. I am
using TCP/IP, print and file sharing for windows, Client for ms
networks and I got desperate and enabled netbeui protocol. I have tried
using static ip addresses, creating Hosts files, defining default
gateway (192.168.1.1) Sometimes I can see the other computers in the
peer to peer network and sometimes not. They are both new installs of
win2k w/ sp4. I try to map a drive on the other pc sometimes it doesn't
see the other pc, sometimes it asks me for a login and password for the
share (I use the admin login and password) but it asks me again for the
login???? I can ping the other pc I have tried to map drive using:
\\ip address\share drive. I can't even use the default share of C$.
Once I saw the other computer on the other computers around me but when
I try to click on the computer to see the shares, I get "the server is
not set up for this operation" I am peer to peer, I don't have a
server. I have looked at the services and made sure the right ones are
started.

I am at my wits end ... I don't know what else to try. I have logged
into the router and everything is ok. I even disconnected the router
and connected with a switch to eliminate the router as a problem. I
think the problem is in the software but every time I work on it the
symptoms change I can't isolate the issue.

What do you think? I have another peer to peer with 10 PCs and a mix of
wired and wireless connections working fine. This

That's OK. Just start a new thread, with a unique and descriptive Subject.
