Can someone, anyone PLEASE answer........

Valorie McLaughlin

I need to know how to stop Vista Home Premium from locking up when I right
click on a file in a folder. Why is this constantly happening? It's
becoming annoying to the point of making me dread doing some of my work
where right clicking is necessary. PLEASE.... how can this problem be
solved?

Hi, Val.

From what you've told us so far, there is NO WAY we can help you. :>(

We can't see your computer. We can't see what you are doing BEFORE you
right-click the file. We can't see what kind of mouse you are using. We
can't see any error messages that might pop up. Heck, we don't even know if
you have a laptop or a desktop computer - or a Sony or an HP - or if you
built it yourself. We don't know if the computer is new or if you've had it
for years. We don't know if this problem just started or if it has been
happening for months. Et cetera...

We want to help users. That's why we volunteer many hours a week in these
newsgroups. But you must help us help you.

Thanks for telling us you are using Vista Home Premium; many users don't
even mention their Windows version. But please give us at least a basic
description of your computer, such as make and model. Tell us WHICH file in
WHICH folder - or does it happen for all files in all folders? Are you
browsing to the file in Windows Explorer? Or opening a file from within a
program, such as Microsoft Word? Are other programs running in the
background at the time?

I could think up more questions, but this should give you an idea of the
kinds of information that will help us help you.

Would love to help you but as R.C. pointed out we need details .Maybe the following
few links that I included below should explain on what and how to post to get proper
help. If you can take the time and read them then you will have an idea on what is
needed when you post so as we can try and help you and solve your issue.
Post back here (we will be waiting ) with the necessary info, Thanks Valerie

You have posted about this problem several times before
and had lots of advice. You seem incapable of following
any of it, especially regarding ShellexView.
If you don't understand basic technical terms regarding
computers then you are asking in the wrong place.
Get somebody who does have a clue, like your next door neighbour's
'nerd' son, to post here. It would be easier to talk to him.

Sorry, here's more info. Example: I open a folder of jpgs on the desktop
and right click on one for whatever reason. I get an error that the program
"This Application" isn't responding. Then the entire PC locks up. It's
constant now.

HP mouse with the red light on the bottom.

It's a HP desktop about 4 yrs old. Well scanned for all crapware.

It's the HP Pavillon.

Tell us WHICH file in

It's mainly image folders I'm have problems with, though it does happen
occasionally when I open a text file. I mainly work with images, JPGs.

Are you

Both from WE and folders on the desktop. Nothing else in the background is
running most of the time. Sometimes an Image SW program may be running, but
not usually. I would love to get this taken care of as soon as possible.

Thank you for this excellent information. The only thing I can add to my
new post above is the HD is huge and only about 1/3 full. It has a dual core
AMD processor and 3 gigs of RAM. The problem started with an occasional lock
up when I used the right button. It became more and more common until it
almost happens all the time now. Mostly, but not only, when I open a folder
of JPGs on the desktop to work on, and right-click on an image. I work with
images constantly so this is awful and wastes a lot of time to say the
least.

"This application" isn`t responding : what program are you using ?

From what you've said most recently, I am guessing that your program that
looks at the jpegs is corrupt.

Try opening that ;program directly and using its file menu to open a jpeg
to see what happens. Also try another program, such as the free irfanview,
or the free Paint.NET. Try using open-with instead of run in the
right-click menu, and choose one of the other image viewing or editing
programs.

Perhaps it would be helpful to see your extension and file type associations.
You could open an Administrator Command Prompt and issue:

assoc .jpg

This will show your current association of extension .jpg with specific file
type. For example on my computer (Vista Business) I get:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\>assoc .jpg
..jpg=jpegfile

So in my case .jpg extension is associated with file type of jpegfile/

Next see which command opens specific file type:

ftype filetype

where filetype is obtained from output of previous assoc command. For example on
my computer I get:

C:\>ftype jpegfile
jpegfile=%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Photo
Gallery\PhotoViewer.dll", ImageView_Fullscreen %1

In my case files of type jpegfile are opened with a/m command which invokes
Microsoft Photoviewer applications and passes option and filename to be opened.

Finally - you may want consider uninstalling completely and reinstalling
application which opens files of type jpegfile.

Hope it helps,

Program? I make a folder on the desktop. I name it something like SuesPics.
I add Sue's images as JPGs. It's a Folder, not a program. I open the
folder and right click on a picture and get the error: "This Application
isn't responding." If this was W98 it would be about like the
BlueScreenOfDeath we all dreaded. But Vista of course just blinks, and
everything comes back in a 15 seconds or so. I need to resolve this
desperately since I work with JPGs all the time.

Error: Windows cannot find 'assoc' Make sure you typed the name correctly

finds nothing under assoc or assoc .jpg. How else can this be located on

The business version must be very different. See above.

The above is not on VistaHomePremium either.

My JPGs open in WindowsPhotoGallery when they don't lock up the folder, then
the entire PC. How can I fix this?

How do I uninstall and reinstall WindowsPhotoGallery?

That would be WindowsPhotoGallery when trying to open a JPG from inside a
folder. It doen't lock up the PC when I open a JPG from the desktop itself.
Try opening that ;program directly and using its file menu to open a jpeg

They open OK but I can't use WPG that way since I have literally many
thousands of pictures on my PC and it takes much to long to find what I'm
looking for. I work with folders on my desktop by subject, person, trip,
etc.

Also try another program, such as the free irfanview,
or the free Paint.NET. Try using open-with instead of run in the
right-click menu, and choose one of the other image viewing or editing

How do I add other Image viewers to the right-click menu?

I don't click on Run, I click on Preview to open a JPG.

L

Lang

So... Vista locks up when you right click on a jpg and select Preview,
right?

And Windows Photo Gallery is what should open when you click Preview, right?

I don't have a Vista seat up and running here... but you can uninstall WPG
by using either Uninstall a Program or Add/Remove Windows features...
whichever one it shows up in... I suspect the latter.

Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features

If it isn't in the "Uninstall or change a program" listing, click on the
"Turn Windows Features on or off" link to the left and find it in that list.
Assuming you find it in the Windows Features window, after uninstalling, go
back to that list and reinstall it.

Good luck!

You did type cmd in the Start search box and open the Command Prompt window
(a black screen), right? I have Vista Home Basic and assoc comes up fine....

I'm getting confused here... I thought you were using Photofiltre as your
image viewer, not Windows Photo Gallery, or was Photofiltre the program you
WANTED to use but the right-click function wasn't working? Did you try
reinstalling Photofiltre?

So, the .JPG files open fine when you double click and they open in Windows
Photo Gallery. It just messes up when you try a right-click "Send To"
function?

The fact that your PC locks up when you try opening a .jpg means that there
is an *association* for the .jpg file type, and it's probably set to the
wrong application. Can you right-click and bring up the menu without it
locking up? If so, click on a .jpg file, right-click and select Open With
and see what program is set to "open" the .jpg. Please post your results.
