can send messages but they don't arrive

I have been happily using Windows Mail since early April when I first got
Vista. On Thursday 24 May sent an email from home to work, that didn't
arrive. I have since discovered that all messages sent since then haven't
not reached the recipient. There are no error messages, and the messages are
in the Sent folder. I would be very grateful if anyone could give me some
idea why this might be happening. I don't think I've done anything to change
any settings! Thanks

Can you reproduce the problem by sending a message to yourself?
Which antivirus program are you running, and do you have it
configured to scan emails?

I have experienced exactly the same problem. I'm running Norton Internet
Security 2007 and it is configured to scan e-mails. I have tried sending an
e-mail to myself, without success. No problems with e-mails sent to me by
others. Any suggestions to rectify this problem? Thanks.

I'm running AVG and it's configured to scan emails. I'm puzzled as to why
this only started happening a couple of days ago. Everything else is fine.

Hi, I've also been using windows mail for a month or two, and now find that
as of 25th May I can receive but not send mail. All sent mail shows as sent,
moves to the sent items folder but does not arrive. I can't send to myself,
and am also using a Dell machine. Internet Security is McAfee - not sure
what, but it was the only one I could find locally that was compatible with
Vista. Any ideas?

Add me to the list Outlook Express and Mc afee. Don't know if connected, but
very frustrating not to be able to send email even to myself.

Read http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3
You will need to uninstall the Norton program completely, as it
is very detrimental to Windows Mail. Reboot and try Windows Mail
again. If it still doesn't work, then Norton has corrupted your
mail account. Add a new mail account with the same settings as
the old one, then delete the old account. Once you get your email
working properly, download and install a less troublesome antivirus
program such as the free Avast. Whichever antivirus program
you keep, be sure to disable its email scanning option.

Hello Gary

I've followed the procedure set out under www.oehelp.com but without
success. Furthermore e-mails sent direct from Tiscali webmail are not being
delivered although I'm still receiving e-mails though Windows Mail. I'll now
try your suggestion to uninstall Norton Internet Security. I've never had
any previous problem with Norton in five years of using their anti viruis
programs. Thanks for your help.

Hi
I've followed the steps outlined as above; I have AVG on my computer and
find it odd that, after nearly 3 months of using Windows Mail with AVG and
Vista the system should suddenly stop sending emails. They appear in the
Sent folder but do not reach the recipient.

Hello tmh

I couldn't agree more. Also it's strange that so many people writing on
this forum experienced this difficulty only from Thursday last week. I'm not
convinced that Norton is the cause especially as you and others are running
different anti-virus programs. I'd be interested to hear other views and
wonder if a recent update has caused the problem.

I've tried sending e-mails to myself but they don't arrive although they show
in the sent box.

The same as with others I send: the message appears in the Sent folder; it
appears as if it has been sent, but it never arrives. I'm feeling a bit of a
numpty over this one, but appreciate everyone else's help.

Try this:

1. Go to the Vista start menu and type cmd
2. The search results will display a program titled cmd
3. Right-click on the link and select "Run as administrator"
4. type "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled" without
the quotatioin marks
5. Test your POP account and see if you can now download your mail.
6. If nothing changes, reenable the autotuning feature by typing
"netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal"

Thanks for your help; unfortunately, I still have no joy. Emails continue to
arrive, but nothing is sent, although messages are sitting in the Sent
folder. They still don't get to recipients. This is true for all three
accounts on our home email. I appreciate your time, though.

Hi, Chris - and all.

Interesting that all those reporting this problem in this thread seem to be
in the UK. All using the same ISP? Or a server that goes through a common
bottleneck?
