can send but not receive new messages - Outlook03, SP1

Recently upgraded to Outlook2003 which I use primarily to access my account
at a University.
University help staff reviewed the account and found nothing ou of line.
The Acount had previously worked with Outlook 2000 using POP and more
recently IMAP
Outlook 03 received and sent mail for 24 hours before losing the receive
capability
Have rechecked server names, user name & password.
Can create messages an send them both to my account and other accounts.
Have restarted both Outlook and Windows XP
Have created new user accounts in Outlook.
Can access the University account through a web URL and see new messages
waiting.
Can access waiting messages using Mozilla Thunderbird. Messages come
automatically to the Thunderbird inbox.

On hitting send and receive, the send task completes, while 2 receive task
hang up with the following error messages:

Task 'Checking for new mail in subscribed folders on XXX.email.umn.edu.'
reported error (0x800CCC0E) : 'Outlook is unable to download folder (null)
from the IMAP e-mail server for account XXX.email.umn.edu. Error: Unable to
connect to the server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your
server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Task 'XXX.email.umn.edu: Folder:Inbox Check for new mail.' reported error
(0x800CCC0E) : 'Outlook is unable to download folder Inbox from the IMAP
e-mail server for account XXX.email.umn.edu. Error: Unable to connect to the
server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server
administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Anyone with ideas on what to try next?
Im about ready to go with Thunderbird eventhough there are 2 Outlook
features I would miss a lot.

Same problem in 2002 also with university account. to work around I had the
university account forwarded to my pop3 account. Has something to do with
how outlook processes unread message headers in imap account maybe. I think
it may have been a modification in one of the windows automatic update
because outlook worked fine until a few weeks ago. it can read the read
messages fine regardless of me having opened them in outlook first or not.

Dunno, just my two cents worth
