I have trouble getting my PC to read a data CD but it reads audio just fine.
I have swapped out the CD drive and still have the problem. Drivers are up
to date. Is there a reason why I'd be getting "Please nsert a disk" message
only on data CD's?

Thanks,

Thanks,

When you swapped the Drives did you bother to swap the cables, also try
swapping the Drive to a Slave on the primary channel to rule out a faulty
IDE controller

I have now switched out the cable and tried it in both slave and primary and
it still see only audio disks not data disks.

Thanks for the ideas. What should I try next?

some older CD readers may not be able to read some disks

how has the data on the CD been put there ?
do you need a udf reader to read data ?
has the CD been finalised ?

The CD reader is only two or three years old and has read some of the data
CD's that it now can't read.

One of the CD's that it can't read is a Kodak Picture CD which can be read
on a laptop that is five or six years old. So I think the reader is fine
with CD format.

I believe now that the CD drive and cable can safely be eliminated from the
troubleshooting process since I have swapped both the cable and drive and
tried it on slave and primary..Are there things to check on the software
side before I think about swapping the motherboard?

Thanks.

I get that now and again. Remember that the data CD contain a list of items that
have to be read in order to present the folders for you.

I figure that either the CD is dirty or the heads have been contaminated. I have
a CD cleaner, cost about $25 australian. A CD with a small brush. When it is
finished doing the job it will on orders show pictures to prove that the heads
are now clean. After that I use an airblower to get the remaining dirt out of
the unit - and that is it - I have 2 Sonys that have been with me for close on 3
years with just that little bit of trouble.

For your information, my stats are:
Win 2000, Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz
1 Gb memory,ADSL
200+200 GB of disc space,Oly C2100UZ,Optio S,Sony 355E, Canon S1.
